How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage?

The car is overheating. I already changed the thermostat, water pump, radiator but was told it might be the head gasket.

I'm good with fixing cars, but I have never done a head gasket. How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage? As weird as this sounds, it is not hard to replace one at all. The problem is time. It takes a while dude. Not like a week but give yourself a full day or more since you've never done this.

Basic stuff before you assume the gasket blew.

Is the car smoking WHITE out of the tailpipe? A blown head gasket allows coolant to get into the cylinder and burn. When white is coming out of the tailpipe, that's coolant. Blue = oil. Black = fuel.

Check that first at start up and when you are driving. If you see it, then yeah it looks like it. If not, check others.

Such as: What's your compression? A typical blown head gasket will lose compression is two adjacent cylinders. Example, number 3 %26amp;4, 5%26amp;6, 1%26amp;2 or anything next to each other. With compression, all of the cylinders should be within 15% of each other. Example: If the highest is 150 (don't know for your car - you can check with a compression tester), then your lowest one should not be more than 135. Do the math, I hate math but you need it with this stuff some time haha.

After exhaust smoke and compression, then check your oil. With a blown head gasket, you are getting coolant into the cylinder which can seap down into the crankcase and mix with your oil WHICH IS HORRIBLE FOR THE BEARINGS! If coolant and oil mix, your oil will look extremely bad! Chocolate milk looking. So if you look at your dipstick or cap or check your oil, then you can see.

After those three, then check your coolant. Are you losing coolant? If you are, bad thing bro. You should not be losing much at all if any. Check that for lowness (is that even a word?). If low, fill it up to the top. Then take the cap off and start the car. If it has bubbles in the radiator (the coolant is bubbly), then that is another sympton.

After that, check for regular things that can cause overheating. Blown hoses, leaking radiator, maybe the thermostat was installed incorrectly, the coolant is old/dirty or it is just low period. Check those. Simple stuff for checking.

You can check compression with a compression tester. Your local parts store will have one.

If the symptons I listed are there, then yes. Suspect the head gasket. Those symptons can also mean other things: Cracked block or cracked head. Unlikely, but I've seen it. So yeah, those are the things to check out.

When replacing it, follow your manual and go from there. I could give you an idea but I don't know your car exactly so I can't be sure. Just take your time, make sure you understand what parts the manual is saying and when you fix the gasket and all that, be sure you TORQUE THE HEAD BOLTS TO THE BLOCK IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE AND AS TIGHT AS WHAT THE MANUAL CALLS FOR. It may be a good idea to buy new bolts too. Talk to your dealer. Make sure the gasket is set on there properly, enough sealant to hold it, and before you install the new gasket, be sure the old one is off completely and the block's surface is evenly aligned. Should not be a problem though.

But hey, you wanna check the other symptons I listed before going on and suspecting the gasket. Best of luck!

ADDED ON: First off, when was the last time you flushed your radiator or just replaced the coolant all together? Secondly, I take it that you have enough coolant to keep it cool if you noticed that you aren't losing any.

If you car is overheating, check these: Coolant, make sure it has enough and is the right coolant for your vehicle! Check with your local parts store to see. If it turns out you filled it with the wrong kind, then buy the kind your car takes and not the predeluted (sp?) type. Just get the kind with correct color and add 50/50. 50 %antifreeze to radiator, 50% water to radiator. What I do with that: 8 cups of antifreeze, then 8 cups of water and repeat until it's full.

Along with those suggestions, check to be sure your thermostat is installed correctly. After doing that, check these to be sure it's good: Your fans are spinning (working), your radiator hoses are good and that your water pump is functioning. Might have twisted something up in the installation. I have done it many times with many parts, but it happens.

So again, flush your system (new coolant - ask people at parts store), be sure your thermostat is working, be sure your fans are spinning, the radiator hoses and heater hoses are good, check your coolant sensor, and all those are how they are supposed be.

Shoot, I've seen cars that when you replace the coolant and fill up with new, the problem goes away. Good luck.

What I would start with: Open hood, start car and check to see if the fans are spinning. If they are, great. If not, there ya go. If they are, then you can move on.

Also, your timing may be off. Not usually if someone didn't touch anything regarding but if you messed with distributor or doing anything like that, it could be off. If you tried everything I listed and nothing helped, let me know and I will add on and try and get this solved. How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage?AND WHEN YOUR DONE DOING THIS, YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO DO IT AGAIN. THE NISSAN V6 IS A HUGE PAIN IN THE BUTT.

GET THE BOOK AND FOLLOW IT EXACTLY !! THERE IS WAY MORE TO IT THAN YOU THINK IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE ONE LIKE THIS BEFORE . NOT THE ONE YOU WANT TO START WITH.. SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO SAY NO... How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage?I tend to agree with inkjax. I'd rather rebuild an entire motor than do a head gasket in place. It never seems to go right the first time, and you have to mill the heads usually anyway. How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage? It might just be easier to do a motor swap, that's what I did but im not the greatest with cars, just easier for me. My cars a 92 which makes it even easier, good luckHow can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage?I fixed my head gasket by using CRC compound. The leak became very small and then I sold it!

BTW a motor swap may make more sense. You need gaskets, time, manuals, straightedge and what nots.

  • How can you tell if the water pump is fried on a 2001 chevy venture?

my van is overheating on my chevy venture , i changed the thermostat and found out after that i ran it with a really big air bubble caught inside , hot water going to rad, but the hose going to the water pump isnt evan warm,,, wondering if water pump is shotHow can you tell if the water pump is fried on a 2001 chevy venture?should be able to watch the flow of coolant in radiator and tell if its pumping

how to check a car thermostatHow can you tell if the water pump is fried on a 2001 chevy venture?sounds like thermostat is bad....u could have fried it by air bubble....could also b ur water pump but would replace the thermostat again first....just make sure u BLEED the system this time...How can you tell if the water pump is fried on a 2001 chevy venture?the air bubble can cause overheating issues too, so purge the system run it for a short time, like around the block and park it, turn it off and make sure the overflow stays full , as everything cools off the system should draw down the overflow so keep that full . usually when the water pump is bad, the weep hole directly on the bottom of the waterpump starts leaking water. this is a sign of a worn bearing. take your time make sure no hot air bubbles are in the system good luckHow can you tell if the water pump is fried on a 2001 chevy venture?I don't know about a Chevy Venture, but when my 1999 Chevy Malibu blew it's water pump, it kept overheating and I had to constantly put anti-freeze in it. After a couple of months of that, it started leaking the whole bottle of anti freeze in like one days time. When I was driving home from school one day it just spit anti-freeze every where. I had to sit and let the car cool. After it did that I drove it right to the shop, and spent about 600.00 to get it fixed. Keep in mind, this happened about 2 years ago, so it might be more or less to get it fixed now.

thanks!!!Heater not working in my Astra?Just a thought. Was the replacement thermostat installed backwards? If not, try filling the radiator and running the engine, with the rad cap off, until the coolant level drops. Then refill the rad and cap it.

If that doesn't work, take it to the dealer.Heater not working in my Astra?take it to the vaxhall garage...Heater not working in my Astra?Defoe an air lock problem,or a blockage in the system. At your local garage they have an automatic heating system

Symptoms of blown head gaskets or cracked heads?

My 95 Acura Legend is overheating after 15-20 mins of 35-40 mph driving. Coolant Reservoir fills to top, gets VERY hot and bubbles over. Radiator fills with pressure and shoots out hot steam when I opened it. Changed out thermostat but didnt solve problem. Dealership said blown head gaskets but the car runs way too good. Its not smoking or anything. What is causing this? How can I tell if I have a blown head gaskets or cracked heads?? HELP!!!Symptoms of blown head gaskets or cracked heads?Blown head gaskets could cause these symptoms. Usually you will see either oil in the water or water in the oil. A compression check gives them a clue too. If your engine oil has any foam in it, then they are right. They are probably right anyway.

Take it in for a second opinion. Don't tell them what the first dealer said. If the second guy confirms it, then you will know.

But I will bet the dealer is right.

    Good luck,

SiggySymptoms of blown head gaskets or cracked heads?it could also be your water pump is bad...Symptoms of blown head gaskets or cracked heads? You've about answered your own question....by observing bubbles of air in the radiator. Sounds like it could be either,,,,head gasket or cracked block.

My engine seems to be running hot?

i got this 94 ranger with a 4.0 and seems to be running hot. i noticed on the guage inside its around the middle of the temp. i had recently flushed out the engine, changed the thermostat, both heater hoses, and both radiator hoses. Someone told me there could be a air pocket inside it. If so, how do you get rid of it? I notice the antifreeze does circulate. Is there possiblity that the radiator cap could be bad? Whats the difference between the 13lb and 16 lb? One better then the other? make engine run cooler? Finally, is there a possibility that the converter be plugged? I notice a previous answer on here sugested that.My engine seems to be running hot?sounds like you have a warped head gasket, it will over heat, suck asntifreeze and have really bad gas mileage if thats the case, and if you touch the engine after driving youll notice its very hotMy engine seems to be running hot?OK, %26quot;On a Scale of 0 to100, Temp. Gage%26quot; Thermostat starts to Open around 35% and is fully open at 50% (Normal). 13lb and 16lb Cap, Different Cap Pressures depending on what the System is designed for, Some Older System 7lb, Newer 12 to 16lb, Diesels I've worked on 16 to 21lb. %26quot;Bottom Line%26quot; Temp. Gauge at 50%, System Not %26quot;Boiling%26quot; into Overflow Tank, Not Leaks (High or Low Oressure), everything is normal. %26quot;NOTE; Coolant=50-50 Mixture of clean Water %26amp; Anti-Freeze Used All Year Round!%26quot;My engine seems to be running hot?check or replace your belt and check your timingMy engine seems to be running hot?you may need to bleed the cooling system i'm not sure how to do that but autozone.com has an online repair manual that might tell you how my husband did that to one of our vehicles....did you notice if your fan was working properly if not you may need a fan motor or a fan clutchMy engine seems to be running hot?If you follow the top radiator hose to the thermostat housing there should be a bleeder valve ontop of the houseing you had to take off to install the thermostat.Start the car, and open the valve untill antifreeze comes out.As far as the lb difference, keep the same psi cap that came with the car, thats basically how much pressure it can withstand before it relieives pressure there would be nothing wrong with replacing the cap, they do go bad .And not sure what you mean by converter unless your refering to the radiator up front. If there is no bleeder cap than open radiator cap with the engine running and make sure its topped off because the coolant level might drop some.GLMy engine seems to be running hot?goto autozone.com and look for the online repair guide for the truck/car (whatever it is)

Aluminum engines like to circulate some coolant thru the cylinder head and that why they have to bleed the air out of them (its far too high above the water pump and hose routeing)

a 16 lb cap holds more pressure and raises the boiling point,,,try one.

and i dont know what you mean by ''converter''. as far as cooling is concerned.

    Timing? 1995 Chevy Luminia?

    Timing? 1995 Chevy Luminia?

Ok here we go again. This has been an ongoing thing. As you can see from the post I have copied. The car is back togeather but now it will not run. When we got the car back togeather I tried to crack it and it just turned over very loosly(not sure how to explain what that sounded like). I checked the compression and one cylinder had no compression. I tried to start it again a few minutes later and the cylinder that had none now had 120 lbs I think it was. Now the car will start but it is not drivable it will backfire through the engine and you can hear it knocking loud on the back part of the engine. It is progressivly getting worse. I could drive the car around the block but now it will not even go two feet without fighting with it. Any ideas?

I posted the question below and then I got to work taking the heads off my engine. I got both of them off last night and out of the back three cyliners two of them have antifreeze in them. Myself and a friend of mine looked at the gaskets for both heads and didn't see anything wrong with them and we also looked at the heads to see if we could see any warpage or cracks. We couldn't see any. Any ideas? I posted the original post below so you guys would have all the details. Thanks for the help. My car is a 1995 Chevy Luminia with a 3.1 V6

This started back about 2 months ago. I was hearing a strange sound coming from around the serpentine belt. I had my brother look at it and he said it was either the tensonier for the belt or it was the water pump so I just replaced both. After I replaced the water pump, the noise did not go away and my car began to run hotter then usual. It was not running hot at this point just a noticable difference in the temp. Over about a week it begin to run hotter and hotter until it finally over heated completely and I changed the thermostat and put it in. I also put some radiator flush in. It said to add pure water(no antifreeze at all) to the flush and run it for about 6 hours driving time. It ran like a charm for about 5 hours driving time but then it over heated all of a sudden. I was driving the interstate when the temp shot up and I started to pull over then it went back down. It did this about three time then it over heated. I pulled over to let it cool down and then I got home(less then a mile from where I pulled over). I got home and I most of my water was gone. I drained the rest out and started to put antifreeze in and bleed the air out but I poured 2.5 gallons it. It should only hold about 2 gallons and it never got full. So checked the oil and it has antifreeze in it. Anyway after all of that I know I need to check the head gasket and few other things but I have no idea what I am doing or what tools I need. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I took the cylinder heads to a machine shop. It turns out they where both warped. The back one where the antifreeze was in the cylinders was warped pretty bad but not so bad they couldn't fix it. I do appreciate the help.

  • I have a 1996 Chevy Blazer, has been overheating, losing coolant, recently the intake manifold leaking?

I have been going through alot with this truck, I changed the thermostat, the cap, flush the radiator. It would blow white smoke from the exhaust for a couple of weeks, so I thought it was the a cracked head gasket, then it stop, but still had to keep putting coolant in the radiator. It was working okay for a while now it started to leak from the top intake manifold, What could be the problem, the solution, and the cost?

Also when I the truck is going down a hill or incline the fuel gauge goes to empty and cuts off and I would have to let the truck coast until it gets to leveled ground and then the gauge goes back up and then I can start the truck again, unless I have over a half a tank of gas, and its gettin on my nerves, could you tell me how to fix that problem also...ThanksI have a 1996 Chevy Blazer, has been overheating, losing coolant, recently the intake manifold leaking? You have two separate problems

Engine: You keep losing water so you have either a cracked block or a blown head gasket (and if it has overheated maybe a warped head or two. Because of the leak on the intake manifold (which has no water in it), I think the head gasket has gone. Look for water in your oil (white froth) whcih is prob. a cracked block or a lot of steam from the engine exhaust (more likely a head gasket but it could also be a cracked block). Since you have to pull the heads to do the head gasket anyway you can check for warpage at that time.. but a cracked block will mean a new short block at the very least... sorry but either way it will be expensive.

Fuel: do you have an electric fuel pump? If so it sounds like you have a loose wire which is knocking out the pump and the gauge wiring when the car is pointed down hill . If it were not for the gauge going south on you I would say it is simply either dirt or something in the fuel that blocks the intake, or a bad fuel pump.. but that sender unit?? that's the puzzler.

Unless you have a trailer hitch, it is easy to drop the fuel tank on most chevy's... just get the fuel level low first (at $3.50 a gallon you prob. dont want to lose too much gasoline).

then you can open up the sender unit, and inspect the tank .. I like the idea that the baffles are bad, but at the same time I have never heard of that.

I have a 1996 Chevy Blazer, has been overheating, losing coolant, recently the intake manifold leaking?Your intake manifold gasket has probably been leaking coolant into your oil for some time now, so you probably need a new engine. The other problem requires you replace the fuel pump.

    My landlord is an idiot?

I have been living in my apartment with 3 children in good faith for the past 9 months. I signed a one year lease and was excited to finally have my first apartment.

During the term that I have been living here, I have been in consistant contact with the landlord regarding numerous issues that needed to be repaired in the apartment. I paid her on time each month and attached a letter whenever there was a repair needed.

I explained to her that there was lack of heat in my house. She flat out told me that I was cold because it was how I was dressed. There was a 3 inch wide gap in the back door leading to the back yard that she said needed to be repaired. When winter came, I was told to purchase a door sweep to block the draft. The door sweep was too short. Her response to me was to use blankets to cover the back door. It was still cold. I then told her that the drafts were too much to endure and she told me once again, that it was because of how I was dressed. After complaining about this issue, she changed the thermostat and it made the room warmer during the day, but then freezing cold at night. I had to purchase a space heater to put into my kids bedroom. I didnt care much if I was cold, I was more concerned about my children. This raised my electric bill several hundred dollars, and her response to me was that the space heater was %26quot;a choice%26quot; and not a necessity.

After becoming agitated (yet still paying the rent) I called the Building Department to investigate this heating issue. I was told that it was indeed chilly and he instructed her to fix the back door and seal up the drafts in the windows. Because I called the Building Department she has made threats to call CPS on me two times, for no reason. When she did not fix the problems the Building Department listed I withheld my rent. I told her that once the problems were repaired I would pay her.

She hired, (in my opinion) and unqualified worker to repair the door and the floors. While he was repairing the floors, he broke the window in my house with the blow torch. Allthough this was accidental, I told her the window could not stay that way because I have children that can hurt themselves. She told me that she wasnt going to fix the window until I paid the rent. At this point, I went BALLISTIC. I called the Building Department and he put us on 3 way and her story changed. She said that I refused repairs. I then proceeded to curse her out for the vermin that she is and then she hung up.

I told the Inspector that for MONTHS, (which I complained to her about too) that I have been asking for her to call the exterminator because there were roaches infested in my bedroom door, (which she said that I BROUGHT) mice and a RAT (yes a rat) in the wall. I told her it was keeping me up at night with the running, scratching and the biting of the steel wool (which it successfuly ate) as well as defication on my countertops, childrens clothing and floor.

She told me in exact words,

    %26quot;If you are so unhappy here, then why dont you leave?%26quot;

Ok, so I want to leave, (obviously) and she wont return my damn security deposit. WTF DO I DO NOW?My landlord is an idiot? No matter what state you live in, the landlord is required to return your security deposit if you havent damaged any of he property.

You have proof that youve called building inspectors and that work has been done on the apartment.

(The building inspectors keep their records of incoming and outgoing calls).

Tenant/ landlord laws exist to protect you and the landlord. I'm sure that if your landlord had a reason to take you to court she would. Well the ball is in your court, so this is a perfectly legitimate and respected reason to take this slumlord to court.

Take pictures of the apartment and get records on the checks given to your landlord to verify your credibility.

Sounds like you have a good case. I've dealt with slumlords myself, in a very similar situation and it just sucks. They dont care about your living situation, no matter how up to date you are with rent. You have a legal right to live in a clean and warm environment.

I might even consider suing her for the money spent on the space heater!

Good luck!My landlord is an idiot?Sounds to me like your landlady is a nasty piece of work, I don't think you're going to get anything done without a fight, and being blamed for things that are not your fault.

I wish you the best of luck either dealing with this, or getting somewhere else to live.My landlord is an idiot?look up your state and local laws (landlord tenant). You should be able to make a demand, if she ignores pay your rent to the clerk of courts and take it up in civil court. Shouldn't cost you much and if you go to court with the letters you have sent and pictures of the problems you should come out ahead. My landlord is an idiot?Document everything you have said here...and take her to small claims after you move out.

Take pictures and gather any evidence you can in order to win.My landlord is an idiot? She is legally required to fix any drafts and make sure you have working heat. That is the law. Her actions after you called the building department is retaliation and also illegal.

%26quot;When she did not fix the problems the Building Department listed I withheld my rent. I told her that once the problems were repaired I would pay her.%26quot; I'm sorry but that was illegal. It is illegal for a tenant to with hold rent over repair issues with out a court order. Yes, she is required by law to fix it but tenants cannot take the law into their own hands. You have to follow the proper procedures.

You need to sue her to legally break your lease without penalty. She then has 14-45 days to refund your deposit depending on state unless the judge orders otherwise. You cannot do anything until that time frame has passed. If she still fails to refund it then you have to sue her for it. You do need to look up the laws for your state though because some require you to send a refund request letter before you can sue her.

Idiots like this are not going to change until the court tells them they have to. They either do not know the laws or just don't care. They just need to be sued.

    2000 Mercury Sable Overheating?

HELP! My 2000 3.0L V6 Merc Sable is OVERHEATING. It has 99k on it, drives great.

It overheated yesterday, I drove 30 minutes to another town, it did fine. I came out of a store, started her up, drove 10 seconds and noticed the temp gaude needle was above the H. I panicked and pulled over.

My bf opened the hood right before the coolant exploded and spewed from beneath the cap...and I mean SPEWED, it gushed out.

Drove 2 secs to a nearby shop.

Mechanic said a fan failed to kick on unless he beat it with his fist, haha. I am beat...I am a 20 yr old college student, with a part time job...no cash, this is my life this Merc Sable.

I call my bro my he's a mechanic 250 miles away...he told me to have the radiator and some other things pressure tested for a leak. then he told me about something to do with %26quot;PSI%26quot;. I know he would know what is wrong with the car if he could check it out, but he cant, so i can only talk to him by phone..I'll have the mechanic talk to him on the phone too...so they can discuss this stuff but I'd like to know anything you can tell me just incase I cant reach my bro.

He changed the thermostat about 7 months ago, including tranny filter, cabin filter, oil filter...plus he changes the oil everytime i come home, which is about every 4k mi, I do not trust most mechanics so I just treck 250 mi home to see family and have my car checked out.

Now I cant go home bc my car will keep overheating so I hope this mechanic is good. He is a christian man and has bible quotes and all the christian stuff in his shop, even has it blaring over the radio. Being christian has nothing to do with your skills, although I hope he is an honest christian and wont rip me off.

So I think I should have my radiator pressure tested, although there is no leaks present, my oil is not a milky color and coolant doesnt leak anywhere and is bright green and not brown.

There is no leaking inside the cabin of the car so I probably can say the heater core isnt busted. It may need a flushing though because my heater doesnt work either, hasnt for the whole time Ive had this car. Ive heard when people have flushed their heater cores, a whole bunch of rust gunk comes out and fixes their heaters temporarely.

Also when the mechanic had to hit one of my fans to make it work, the other one didnt work at all, so maybe it is an electrical problem with the fan...or is the second fan only supposed to come on when the temp of the car reaches a certain point?

I also know there is a possibility with the water pump busting??? if you know about that please tell me all about it and how it could affect my fans in any way, im dying to know.

Anything anyone could tell me would help! ID APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH!

SO, what is making my fans not turn on?

Id like to give the mechanic any tips I can from research so I know there can only be a few problems with the car and have him not pull my leg and make me pay for a new head gasket repair when mine is perfectly fine, ya know?

thank you so much!2000 Mercury Sable Overheating?well, overheating can very well crack a head. its a good sign that the car still starts. that shows that no compression is being lost through a crack in the head. your fan is controlled by a tamp switch. this switch also gives you your temp reading on the gauge. the temp switch tells the cooling fan control unit when to turn the fan on. if the mechanic had to hit your fan to turn it on you probably have a short it the fan motor. a new fan would be needed. if the control unit proves to be bad you can always wire you fan to a switch to avoid costly repairs. however, doing this would force you to keep a constant eye on your temp gauge so you know when you need to turn it on. the fan should kick on around 3/4 on the gauge( about 200-220 deg.) as for your overheating, this could be caused by several different things. your thermostat may not be operating properly(stuck closed), your water pump could have failed(you would see coolant leaking out the seep hole...pretty obvious honestly). your radiator could be clogged with dirt, bugs and other crap you run into while driving down the road. your fan not turning on when needed (while sitting at an idle, your temp goes up pretty quickly).

your brother is right about the pressure test. you shouldnt exceed 13 psi on the gauge for the tester. however, this will only tell you if there are leaks. it will show if the water pump has blown a seal causing it to leak out the seep hole.

what you should have done: do the pressure test to check the water pump(replace it if needed), change the thermostat(again), replace the fan motor(check to make sure the fan kicks on when its suppose to. otherwise hard-wire the fan to a toggle switch which should be mounted in the cab of the car) and do a radiator flush. having the flush professionally done should help with your heater issues as well. and check your hoses...you could have a clogged hose. also have your radiator blown out(the mechanic will use a air nozzle with lite air pressure to do this( to much air pressure could destroy the fins on the radiator....wouldnt be good...the radiator has to have air moving through it to cool the coolant)

the second fan in your engine compartment is for the A/C. air moves across the condenser to keep the pressure on the high side of the A/C around 250psig. this fan will only turn on when you turn your a/c on it is controlled by a fan switch on the high pressure line...if the a/c is operable.

just cause the mechanic is a christian doesnt mean he doesnt have a business to run...he WILL get every penny out of you that he can. in a professional manner of course.

hope this helped. feel free to email me if you have any other questions2000 Mercury Sable Overheating? What color was the coolant? If it was brown, that's bad news. You never want to put tap water into the radiator, because it has minerals in it, which can cause corrosion, specifically, the vanes of the water pump could have corroded, and not circulated enough coolant. In that case, you'd need to replace the water pump. Always use distilled water in the radiator. It's also possible that the new thermostat was a cheap part of poor quality, and maybe that caused the overheating.

The fan is not controlled by the temp switch. There is a temperature sending unit that is connected to the cars computer, and when the computer determines the engine is too hot, it will activate a relay, which powers the fan, because the computer doesn't have enough power to run a fan.

First replace the necessary hoses, and refill with coolant. Start the engine and let it warm up. As it reaches operating temperature, you should be able to feel the upper radiator hose get warm from hot coolant circulating to the radiator. As the engine gets hot, the fan should turn on. The mechanic should check for voltage to the fan when the engine is hot but not overheating. If there is 12-14 volts to the fan, then the ground circuit should be checked. If the ground circuit (one wire connecting directly to the car body) is good, then the fan is the problem. If there's no power to the fan, then the fan relay could be the problem.

    Renault 21 (1998) overheating?

    Renault 21 GTS - fabrication 1988

Engine: gasoline 1721 cc, 69 kw (94 hp)

    Problem: Overheating

After overheating it will not start until cooling down a bit.

The temperature gauge behaves very strange. It gets to 90 and then, randomly, suddenly gets to 95-98 stays there for about half a second and than back to 90.

If I get the engine at about 3000 RPM (or more) and then release it, the RPM gets at about 700, the engine almost stops, and than back to 1000 RPM (the idle running). Some times the engine stops.

I've changed the thermostat various times but the same result.

I've changed the temperature sensor on the radiator various times but it keeps starting the fan too late, when the water is almost boiling.

There are also new spark plugs and new spark plug coil.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix that?Renault 21 (1998) overheating? water pump replacement, is this in Fahrenheit 90

Civic 01 ex coupe overheating problem same symptoms as DR I?

Hey whoever had the same problem please tell me how you fixed it?

have a 2001 Civic Ex. The temperature gauge is running high and low, not like before. I noticed when the engine is warmed up and the fans dont come on as fast as they used to. I changed the thermostat. I check the motor and the wiring for the fan. All are ok. No fuse blown out. I looked for the relay in the engine fuse box. I am assuming I changed the relay for the fan (the relay that corresponds to the pic of a 4 flap pinwheel on the engine fuse box). The funny thing is when I put the a/c on the fan come on. Also the heater is acting up. It takes a long time for it to heat up.Civic 01 ex coupe overheating problem same symptoms as DR I?purge the air from the system. and just because a part in new doesn't mean it's good. put the t-stat in a pot of water then turn on the heat watch for the stat to open and immediately check water temp. compare it to the temp printed on the stat.

  • No hot water. Can you figure this one out?

This past Wednesday morning I took a luke warm shower. The water pressure was fine and continues to be fine but no matter how long I run the hot water it does not get any hotter (I haven't touched the water heater before this). I changed the thermostat. I changed the heating elements. I even went out and bought a whole new water heater and placed it - still the same problem - luke warm water. What am step(s) am I missing? No hot water. Can you figure this one out?Logic would seem to indicate that one of the elements may not be getting energized or there is a voltage problem. A multimeter should be used to determine if proper voltages are present. No hot water. Can you figure this one out?The valve at the water heater is not completely open or it could be the valves at the sinks or tub. You will obviously be checking the valves for the hot water. That would be my guess after all that you've done.No hot water. Can you figure this one out?Your water heater thermostat isn't working properly. Your best bet is have a serviceman check the system with the proper test equipmentNo hot water. Can you figure this one out?are all of your facets the same problem? or just the shower, if just the shower than the valve has a mixer and an equalizing valve that not adjusted properly or deposits in your water lines, r u sure the new hot water heater is hooked up properly the first answer about the valve open all the way sounds like a good place to look, but if its a gate valve and not a ball vave it could be a stem broken on the gate valveNo hot water. Can you figure this one out?is it luke warm everywhere? do you have the correct voltage (electrical problem) did you allow tank to fill before turning on power if not it will instantly ruin element. did you wait long enough. you need to check amperage just remember only one element at a time will be on. is the new one piped in correctly? there is usually an overload that could be tripped. No hot water. Can you figure this one out?Maybe you need a new circuit breaker.

All those steps should guarantee that your hot water system is good to go. Well, what's left?

The power. Check the power coming into the water heater. I bet that instead of 240, you're only getting 120. One leg of your circuit breaker is fried. Replace it and everything should be fine.

My car keeps blowing white smoke and over heating. Why?

I am thinking it's a cracked block but not sure. It's a 1994 Honda Civic LX. I've put a bottle of that cracked head or engine block sealer in and the car runs fine for 3 weeks then the car starts to shake and over heat again. The white smoke comes back also. I also noticed oil in 2 of my spark plug cylinders. I've changed the Thermostat and just changed the timing belt and water pump. What could this mean? Right now it's shaking again and I'm sure when I buy the seal it will stop again for 3 weeks but I need to know how to keep my car running without this problem. HELP!! Thanks!!My car keeps blowing white smoke and over heating. Why?The oil in the spark plug tubes is an unrelated problem - the tube seals (part of the valve cover gasket kit) are not sealing. They may need Permatex to seal them.

The main problem is most likely to be a failed head gasket, with a warped head caused by an episode of serious overheating. The sealant won't hold if the head is significantly warped, so your experience is a good indicator of a warped head. The cure is to remove the head, have it checked for flatness and cracks, and milled if it is warped but not cracked. A new head gasket, lots of hours and cursing, and you are back in business. My car keeps blowing white smoke and over heating. Why?It's blowing white smoke because water is leaking past the head gasket and burning in the engine. The heads are more than likely warped, or the gasket could just be leaking. Either way, if you cant fix it yourself it's going to cost you about a grand to have it fixed in a garage. You have to ask yourself. Is a '94 Civic worth that much money? I'd be looking for a new car.My car keeps blowing white smoke and over heating. How can I troubleshoot a Prizm water pump?

I just picked up a 1993 GEO Prizm that overheats. I changed the thermostat with no success. The water pump is not making any noises or leaking, but I suspect that could be the problem. I don't detect any water in the engine oil, so I don't suspect head problems. The top hose to the radiator gets extremely hot, but the bottom hose is cool. In this weird car, the thermostat is connected to the bottom radiator hose at the engine, which is the opposite of what I am used to. How can I figure out if the pump is actually pumping properly?

Another issue, which I don't think is the overheating cause, is the heater core has a leak in it. I put a can of stop-leak in the system to plug that up, but I am not sure yet if it is still leaking or not. Even when the car engine is really hot, no heat comes out of the passenger compartment heater anyway. Both problems existed before the stop-leak was added. I am thinking the passenger compartment heat problem is either a clogged heater core or a non-functioning valve that connects to the heater control cable. Any thoughts on this issue also? I was thinking I should just bypass the heater core by connecting the hoses where they go to and from the heater core at the firewall until I figure out the overheating problem.

Your input is appreciated. How can I troubleshoot a Prizm water pump?As for the water heater, disconnect the heater hoses, make sure the coolant system is full and start the car. If coolant flies out of one of the hoses, the water pump is fine. While the hoses are disconnected, run a garden hose through the heater core and see if there is good flow. If not, the stop leak or something else has plugged up the core. This might be the same problem with the radiator which will cause overheating.

Why does my car get hot?

My coolant gauge inside the car reads that the car runs at either half or more. The car is simply getting too hot so how do I fix this? I changed the thermostat already but didn't make much of a difference, and my coolant is full too. Another thing just so everyone knows... coolant leaked just a little bit just underneath the thermostat. Idk if this is a line or what, but it seemed to slow down a little bit. So confused... All help appreciated! Why does my car get hot?could also be an issue with the water pump.. if you see coolant leaking under the car a lot of times that can be the source... I would say that you could possibly have a leaky head gasket if you car is erratically getting hot...

are you getting any white smoke at start up?

then again if you have electric fans be sure to check that they are operating as they should...Why does my car get hot?what kind of car is it?the coolant dripping could be from when you changed the thermostat.but check your fluid level.if its low,it could be that you didn't put enough coolant in it after you changed the thermostat or you are burning coolant or it is leaking somewheres.sometimes if a car has ac,leaves or debris can get up between the radiator and ac radiator making it hard for air to go through them and the vehicle will run hotter. Why does my car get hot?Check your radiator and make sure it is circulating like it should.

Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?

I posted on here a month ago or so about my car, a 1996 Sunfire. One day it just started overheating for no apparent reason.

My dad replaced the thermostat, the water pump, and ran a hose through the radiator, none of which worked. Though, after that, the overheating seemed to occur at a much slower rate than before. The gauge would just very slowly climb towards the red.

Finally, he decided to just replace the head, since it had been leaking anyway. He took it out, and it did have a few cracks in it, and he figured that must be the problem. He just finished it today, and the car is STILL very slowly overheating when you run it.

The car runs really well other than this, and doesn't really have any other problems. The new head he got for it does not have any cracks, and the temperature gauge is not broken- the engine is getting hot. The fan is working properly.

He is now going out the buy some hose to bypass the heater core and see if it's clogged up, because at one point when he was changing the thermostat and all of the other things, the heater inexplicably stopped working. Without doing anything to it though, it started working again. It had never had any issues. Could the heater core be the problem?? If so, what would that entail as far as fixing it?

Another thing is that he said there was some kind of gunky slime in the coolant reservoir, and he wasn't sure what it was. Does that indicate a possible problem?

Does anyone know what the problem could be and how he could fix it?? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks! Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?After replacing the thermostat, water pump, running a hose through the radiator, and replacing the head your dad was probably so frazzled that he forgot to add the coolant.

Fill the reservoir with fresh coolant and then carefully drive your Sunbird a couple hundred miles to clean everything out and you'll be fine. Take some extra coolant with you and consistently check the temperature gage on your driving adventure. You are good for another million miles. Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?This sounds like a possible plugged radiator. Get the car warmed up to normal temperature. Run your hand or temperature gun over all of the radiator. It should be uniform in temperature with no cold spots. Most radiator shops can also flow test the radiator if you remove it and take it to them. Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?I am no mechanic, but does the car have a cooling fan? It may be that the car slowly gets warm and the cooling fan isn't starting. This could happen when you idle for any length of time which would cause the car to overheat. Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?sounds like a crack in the top of one of the pistons, if the head had cracks in it the pistons will also be more than likely cracked or have a broken ring ( that would let oil get into the cooling system ) you can bypass the heater core easy without getting a different hose, just cut and splice together with a piece of steel or plastik hose, to remove the heater core you will have to take the dash apart on the passenger side, depending on what kind of vehicle it is some have covers that have 4-6 screws and the cover comes off, disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core ( under the hood ) flush the cooling system completely and add a chemical called water wetter this will lower the temp also, just add it to your antifreeze ,Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?Your car is 13 years old -- go to Autozone and buy a new radiator! This will likely solve your overheating woes. GM introduced their 'yellow' coolant/antifreeze in the '90's and this stuff is pure garbage when it finally breaks down. It turns to brown sludge and goops up the entire cooling system. I have discussed this issue with several radiator specialists and they all agree -- given the chance they would flush out the high-mileage yellow coolant and replace it with the more 'conventional' green fluid if the car is out of warranty. Your car will suffer NO ill effects what so ever and you won't have the sludging issues anymore. Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?check your cooling fans and make sure your thermostat is opening up.when car is warm squeeze top hose if solid then it is not opening.cooling fans or fan in front of radiator and you also might have to open the bleeder on the side of the engine to let the air out.Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?I think you have a partially plugged radiator and it's letting it slowly over heat. Running a hose through it to flush it out don't always work. Why in the crap is my car STILL overheating?? Please help!?The heater core will not cause an overheat problem, if anything the heater core (if flowing properly) will help to cool the engine.

Sounds like you need a cooling system flush and new radiator.

  • A/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs?

I have just bought this house, so this A/C is completely new to me. I also don't know anything about heating/cooling so bare with me.

-The furnace has a humidifer attached to it. Do I need the humidifer on during the summer? and what do I have it set at? - it looks like there is high/low/med options.

-The A/C does not cool the rooms upstairs, they can range from 27-28degrees, when it is 24 degrees downstairs, how can I fix this?

-When the A/C comes on, it stays on for over 40 minutes before it shuts off. It also comes on everyhour. Why is it doing this?

-I also had problems in the winter with it. It would come on every 5 minutes. I changed the thermostat and it helped a little bit, but I had to have it set at 22 degrees for it to not come on

    that much.

-Also where would be a good spot to put the thermostat? Right now it is in the livingroom, but I would like to know if I can move it upstairs.

Please help.A/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs?First you should check all your upstairs vents to ensure they are open along with checking the return vents too. Often times return vents get covered with furniture which will significantly reduce cooling ability. The previous owners may have had the upstairs vents closed during the winter as hot air rises which tends to automatically heat the up stairs. Check those things first, a properly working return vents should be able to hold a light piece of paper to the vent when you let it go against the vent and a properly working supply vent should blow the same piece of paper as well.

The thermostat should be in the room or area that is most used and a location that is some what central to the rest of the house. It would be ill advised to put the thermostat up stairs unless that is where you spend the vast majority of your time. One trick is to partially close the vents in the room where the thermostat is which will allow less air in to that room thus taking it longer to cool the room down to the shut off point which gives the other rooms more time and air to cool down as well.

You should also check for sources of heat such as leaky window and poor insulation in the Attic which could be causing some of the problems.

Good luckA/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs? The placement of the thermostat can affect your comfort. For instance, your TV produces a lot of heat. If your thermostat is near it, it will not be reading the accurate room temp. Heat rises, so it is always going to be warmer upstairs. We had an air return placed upstairs so the AC unit is cooling the warmest air. Hope this helps!A/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs?make sure all the vents are open upstairs, and then make sure the valves or whatever they are on the vents attached to the furnace are turned the correct way so the cold air flows thru the whole house.A/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs? It might need cleaning. I would probably consider getting an A/C repair service. They should be able to clean it, service it and show you how it works properly.A/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs?Turn the humidifier off in the summer. It adds moisture to the air. Unless you live in a dry desert, you don't want that. Turn it on in the winter, unless you live in a climate that's already humid. In cold dry weather, you will appreciate having some moisture in the air.

In the house - to cool the upstairs more, close the vents in the basement, if you have one. If you don't have a basement, close some of the vents on the 1st floor. This will force the system to push more cold air upstairs. Gravity will pull the cold air downstairs.

The thermostat should be where you spend most of your time during the day, but away from sources of heat or cold. This is usually the first floor, but generally not in the kitchen.

The AC and heat will come on depending on the setting on the thermostat. In the winter, it will heat the house if the temp. falls below the setting - in the summer, it will cool if the temp. inside goes above the setting.

If you just got the house, I would recommend you call a heating/cooling contractor to inspect the system, and tune or adjust it if necessary. You can ask them to explain how to operate it if necessary.A/C - runs for a long time, doesn't cool upstairs?Something important to remember when heating and cooling is:

Hot air rises. Cool air sinks.

I have a neighbor who was using a window a/c unit, and she realized she had to locate it on the second floor to cool both floors. This is because cool air sinks. It sounds like you have central air, but the air still needs to be channelled above in order to cool both floors... again because cool air sinks.

Something extremely helpful in both heating and cooling your home, and for significant energy savings, is to install %26quot;reversible%26quot; ceiling fans. In the hot months you set them to high rotation and they act like an ordinary fan. They work wonderfully together with A/C so that you don't need as much of the A/C. In the winter if they are %26quot;reversible,%26quot; you change the speed of the fan to gently push the warm air down from the ceiling where it normally collects... remember: hot air rises. Since you don't sit on the ceiling, this lets you enjoy the warm air better and again saves you fuel.

You may be able to install the ceiling fans yourself... they aren't difficult. Go to a do it yourself type hardware store and ask for instruction.

As for the a/c unit coming on in the winter and it not cooling the upstairs, i think you probably want to call a trained a/c service person to take a look at it and tell them specifically your thermostat issue and the problem with the cooling not reaching the upstairs.

    good luck!

p.s. ... i'm putting some links to ceiling fans and energy savings below.

How to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?

Please help, I have no money and am doing everythin I can on my own to my 1997 saturn sc2 as I'm working 7 days a week just to support my mother...

    1. Someone mentioned to me to take the BOTTOM radiator hoze out and let all the air sip out, run the heater while doing this, and then plug it back in. Is that the RIGHT way to bleed my saturn ? I think I missed a step or something..

    2. Can you please tell me how to bleed it AFTER I've changed my thermostat (which im currently doing) so that I can do them both at the same time.

    3. When I took the bottom hose off to begin the thermostat exchange, tons of air came out first, how bad is this ? Does that mean the head gaskets probably already cracked, or do people bleed just to stop that exactly ?

I'm still doing it as I check Y! Answers, so please feel free to refer to things as if the hose was disconnected ,because it is.

Thank you very muchHow to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?Not sure who told you to take the bottom hose off but that is pretty funny.

FIll the system with anti-freeze. Then leave the radiator cap or reservoir tank cap off and run the car until it heats up. Also run the heat. You'll see lots of bubbles coming up through the top as the water pump forces the water out. You may need to add antifreeze as this happens (don't fill the tank to the top though). If you don't open the cap then 1/2 your antifreeze will come out with the air.How to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?hook everything back up and fill rad and reservoir with coolant/drive around the block and come back and check the reservoir for proper level/just do that a few times and that will bleed it/however it has been my experience that the engines on that model break rather easily when overheatedHow to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?Open the top of the overflow for the radiator and keep it filled and run the car with the heater on. It should get the air out itself because it uses the overflow. How to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?Fill the radiator and reservoir with new coolant.

Turn the heater on full HOT.

Start engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off.

    Keep the system full.

Once a steady stream of hot coolant comes out of the radiator then replace the cap while the engine is still running.

After this is done for the next couple of days when the engine is cold check the coolant level and top off as needed.

Once you are sure it is full you are good to go.How to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?Listen to Robert. He's right. You have to leave the radiator cap loose so the air can escape. How to bleed antifreeze to get air out of system and gaskets ?Eng. Coolant system. How much pressure should these hoses have on them?

I've got a 1997 Caravelle 1900BR with a Volvo Penta 3.0L 4 cylinder. The first outing on the boat it blew a circulation hose (runs from thermostat housing to circulating pump on block). The hose blew when I turned the engine off. Everyone told me that I had excess exhaust pressure. So I changed the thermostat, cleaned the riser, blew through the manifold. I let the engine run today for approx. thirty minutes at diff. rpms, periodically checking the hoses. The circulating hose for sure had pressure on it, I could squeeze in on it, but the hose would only compress approx. 1/4 in. The hose running from the thermostat housing to the riser had about the same compression, this line is very rigid though and is hard to squeeze together with the engine shut-off. The small L-shaped line that runs from the therm. housing to the manifold has no pressure at all on it, I could compress it all the way together. When I turn the engine off, immediately all the hoses are easy to squeeze together, have no pressure on them.

My question is, is this normal? Does this sound about right?

Also at idle the majority of water dumps out between transom and unit, a small stream runs out of the exhaust ports (directly above lower unit). Is this also correct? Should no water come out of the prop?

Thanks in Advance. How much pressure should these hoses have on them? The pressure you are talking about is normal. What you should be watching is the temp. And also the oil pressure. You said that you ran the motor at diff rpms but did you put in the water? Flush muffs will cause the motor to act a little different than it will in the water. Go out easy and watch your gauges. Bring it in a little at a time.

How do I bleed air out of cooling system in my 98 Intrigue?!!?

my 98 olds intrigue has been overheating the past 2 days. My bf and I changed the water pump about 4 months ago and just changed the thermostat yesterday. It's still overheating.

We are thinking there might be air in the system (I can hear fluid gurgling inside the radiator and my hose that goes into the engine blocks vibrates when hot). there is a valve on top of my thermostat housing-is this what I use to get the air out? How do I do this (just unscrew the valve and turn the car on?)

the manual didnt tell us what to do.

thanks!!!How do I bleed air out of cooling system in my 98 Intrigue?!!?yes that is the one open it up and steam should come out do this intill a steady stream of coolant comes out of it. I always do it with the car on.How do I bleed air out of cooling system in my 98 Intrigue?!!?start your car and pull 1 of the heater hoses off, just for a second and then put it back on.How do I bleed air out of cooling system in my 98 Intrigue?!!?Try removing the radiator cap and letting the engine idle long enough to open the thermostat, i.e. get to operating temperature. Then top off the radiator tank and replace the cap.

Good luck. How do I bleed air out of cooling system in my 98 Intrigue?!!?first i would pressure test the system , to check for any leaks in the system , the gurgling sounds like it could be a head gasket leak, the intake stroke will force coolant into the cylinder and the commpression stroke will force air into the cooling system (explaining the gurgling sound). Another sign of head gasket leakage is to fill the coolant right full and look for a pattern of small air bubbles to appear or you can look under the oil cap to see if it is a milkshake like substance. Before condemming the head gasket it is best to exaust all other possibilities. It is possible, on the other hand that there is vapor lock (air in the system) in the system from the system being completely empty and filled again, but running the engine for 15 minutes with the rad cap off should fix that. Another possibility is that you bought a faulty thermostat, hey it does happen (test by putting in boiling water and seeing if it opens) an external leak explains the overheating and a low fluid level can cause the coolant to boil, causing the gurgling sound. But yeah, to answer your original question you are right in that valve is is for bleeding the cooling system. It is best if you can attach a clear hose to the end of the valve after you open it (with the engine running), so that you dont get coolant everywhere and so that you may see any air bubbles trapped in the system.

    good luck!

On average how long should an air unit run?

I live in a modular home and have had repairs done to the unit. It was icing up and a leak. That was fixed. The technician changed the thermostat to an updated honewell which displays the inside temp. I have the thermostat set on 89 because the inside is always 89 and I can't afford to set it at 78 or 80. Even on 89 it runs for hours. The inside displays 89 and the thermostat is set on 89, but it still does not cut off. What can I do?On average how long should an air unit run?You said the lines and have been checked, leaks fixed, and lines recharged. You have a new thermostat that I assume is set to %26quot;Auto%26quot; and not fan only. As a retired Manufactured Home dealer who has sold many AC units, I can tell you that those units will run practically non-stop on hot days. This does not sound A-Typical. I found that setting the thermostat to a comfortable level will not skyrocket your electrical bill. I did exactly what you are doing. I just found that setting it cooler did not make a substantial difference in the bill. Like you said, it runs for hours now already. If it is going to run, get some benefit from the $ you are spending and let it get you some cool air in the house.

Now, with that said, check to see what kind of air loss you are getting. Are your windows sealed and caulked. Are any windows open. (I know...I had to ask.) Are exhaust fans running? Is the blower on the furnace set to the right speed? (Yes, there are seperate blower speeds for heating and AC.)Are there large gaps in the doors. Be sure the marriage seams are caulked tight and sealed. Most of these are little things that can add up to a lot of loss.On average how long should an air unit run?Unplug it.On average how long should an air unit run?does cool air comeout of the vent? If you set it at 89, it shouldnt run all that long. are you sure you have it on auto and not fan only setting. On average how long should an air unit run?Check your inside coils for excessive dirt, make sure the on/auto switch is on Auto ( This cuts the fan off when the desired temp is reached, if left on the on position, the cooling unit WILL stop running, but fan will continue )On average how long should an air unit run?yea make sure the fan switch is on auto and not on. units should run at least 20 min to get the moisture out.. ive seen them run all day when the c/a return wasnt right.

  • What damage did freezing do to my grandmother's bathtub faucet?

My grandmother's house is vacant, and luckily I just happened to check on it just a day or so after the furnace's thermostat broke. Especially lucky because the outdoor temperature dropped to an extremely low 1 degree that night!

The temperature was 44 degrees when I replaced the thermostat, and a faucet far from the main part of the house was already dry due to freezing. Water was still running in the main part of the house where the bathtub is. (I didn't try the bathub faucet.)

The next day the indoor temperature was still only 56 degrees and the water was stopped at EVERY faucet. I changed the thermostat so that the furnaced ran at the higher setting (stage 2). And I closed an outdoor access door to the crawl space.

The next day water was available from all faucets.

Unfortunately, cold water was coming out the bathtub faucet even though the valves were closed. Not just a drip, but a steady stream. Far from full force, though.

Can you explain how this is possible?

The house is 100 years old, but the faucet and valves are modern (about 7 years old). I don't know if the plumbing itself is updated, or if it's just new fittings. The fittings look like those in this picture:

    http://www.viewpoints.com/images/review/

A major difference is that grandma's tub doesn't have the middle valve, and there is a thing to pull up on the faucet to redirect the water to the shower head. I'm told that the ones in this picture are Gerber fittings, and that Gerber knobs can be retrofitted on old plumbing. (I'm not positive if Grandma's fittings are Gerber -- just that they look like them.)What damage did freezing do to my grandmother's bathtub faucet? If you are not familiar on how to replace the faucet valves and or O rings or seals you may want to call a plumber. It more then likely froze these and busted them in the freeze and that is why you have your leaks.

Chances are the faucets are the newer type and you can buy new seats and O rings at almost any hardware store. What damage did freezing do to my grandmother's bathtub faucet?if you look in that picture the gasket / grommet in the persons hand is what is stopping the water flow. somehow in the freezing that gasket which is rubber must have torn or been damaged. perhaps from trying to turn the valve when there was still ice in the valve body.

Not a big fix. shut the water off and take that valve apart. run up to the hardware store and get a new grommet for a buck.

    Good luck.

    Car problems please help!?

Ok where do i begin. My car has been overheating, today i drove it a good 30 miles before it started to overheat. Ive checked the radiator, changed the thermostat, checked all the hoses, and everything seems fine. so i took it to pep boys and they performed a %26quot;blop%26quot; test (not sure what the test is really called). any way they told me that if the liquid changes color that it means that coolant and oil are mixed together and that it probably means that i have a blown gasket. and sure enough when they performed that test the liquid changed color and they told me that there is no pressure. well i drove it home and no overheating. my questions is this,

1.)How does coolant mixing with oil damage the engine?

2.)The car performs well, except for the overheating. What can i expect in the future?

3.)I know this problem is expensive to fix but is there an alternative to changing the engine? Anything Please!!!!!!!!!!!

4.) Can this problem be fixed at home? (Obviously with someone that has experience with fixing cars)

Thanks to anyone that helps answer my question.Car problems please help!?1.) The engine can not compress water. Oil and water don't mix. Water will breakdown oil thus busted motor

2.) Excessive overheating will ruin you engine

3.) If head gasket is blown, just change it

4.) Yes can be done at home. Get a repair manual at autozoneCar problems please help!?WHAT TYPE OF ENGINE? IF ITS A HEAD GASKET IT CAN BE REPLACED AT HOME ,BUT YOU STILL MIGHT HAVE A CRACKED BLOCK OR HEAD. A HEAT DAMAGED ENGINE CAN BE VERY COSTLY IN MANY AREAS. GOOD LUCKCar problems please help!?well it could be a blown head gasket or if you drove it very long over heating it can warp the heads or crack the block but oil and coolant should not mix because not because its dangerous but because something isn't right if water is getting into your oil that means your engine is not getting enough lubricant if your engine isn't getting enough lubricant then your going to start busting your connection rods then your crank will definitly need to be replaced if it gets a flat spot and then talk about some money problems so save your trouble replace the head gasket and while you have the heads off have them checked to make sure they are not warped you didn't mention what kind of car you have so i couldn't tell you the difficulty of doing it

How do I bleed air out of my 98 Olds intrigue cooling system?!!?

my 98 olds intrigue has been overheating the past 2 days.

How do I do this (just unscrew the valve and turn the car on?)

the manual didnt tell us what to do.

thanks!!!How do I bleed air out of my 98 Olds intrigue cooling system?!!?You are on the right track. Where you see that bleeder valve above the waterpump, follow that metal line to the right side of the engine and see if you see one three feet over as well. You dont bleed any coolant system with the car running. Take the radiator cap off and take a 7mm wrench and crack the bleeder (crack means un loosen it one turn). Leave the car off during this process, car can be hot or cold, doesn't matter. Wait until fluid (coolant) starts coming out of the bleeder, it should be a steady pace, when it it, tighten the 7mm bolt and it's bled. If you have two bleeders, do the same thing to the other bleeder, good luck, hope I helped.

I think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?

So my central air wasn't working at all . I just moved in. So i am clueless on how to fix anything. My friend recommended one of her husbands friends to come take a look at it. So when he removed the little thermostat or whatever that box is called that controls the temp. 3 duracell batteries came out. The box wasnt' turning on, so i figured it just needed batteries. And i told him that but he insisted some wire in my attic was burnt and didnt program with the thermostat. But how could he have known this if the thermostat didnt even have batteries and wasn't even on from the beginning? So he ended up removing my awesome little digital box that had the dates program on there Monday-Friday for this crappy little digital one. Then he charged me $260.00 and kept my box in his tools and said that if it still didnt work too good to just put freeon on it that he could do it for an extra $50.00. He said he fixed some wires that burnt off and changed the thermostat. Is this even a good price for this? i really feel ripped off and very disappointed for him taking my other box with himI think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?i hope he bought u dinner cause u been had,,,a new thermostat is approx$30-$50,,1/2 hr labor to inst is approx $90,fix a burnt wire $20 labor, and to not ck Freon is just being a lazy a##,,,,i would call him bk and tell him u want your old tt bk,,,it is wise to to get a prof. to wk on your equipI think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?sounds like he's gonna sell your old thermostat. however, i like the old kind better. and they last longer. call a real repairman. since you're not at all technically inclined, it'll be hard to get an accurate diagnoses here.

260 dollars is a good price for fixing something. but only if the problem goes away. the old style thermostat runs in my area between 25 and 45 dollars. plus labor, which is always expensive.I think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?Sounds reasonable to me if i do side work i charge $50 an hour. A digital t stat from a supply house runs $60 to $100 plus i mark that up i little. I do this for taking up my time and to make it worth my while and its still cheaper than having a company come out. The batteries in the tstat are just a back up in case you lose power the batteries keep all the programing you have set. Added freon for $50 is high but that depends on how much you needed

    Lincoln Continental 2000?

Car keeps overheating! What's the problem?

Ok so I changed my water pump and I changed the thermostat and all because it was overheating. So we thought that it would stop however it is still over heating what could be the problem? How much would in your opinion it cost to get it fixed I would really appreciate it thanks a lot! =) Its not leaking anymore everything is put right but still overheating...Lincoln Continental 2000?if you changed the thermostat and water pump im sure your smart enough to check that the radiator is full of coolant (not the overflow tank)

i'm assuming that you have 50/50 mix not straight antifreeze. also, it may be something insane like the pores in your radiator clogged (not likely though).

i would first check to make sure that all hoses are clear...

then i would check and see if your fan is working. ooh.. that's a good idea... do that first. let the car idle for a while and if the fan doesn't engage then go from there. im not too sure if the fans in a lincoln continental are electric or not. if they are electric then it could be some screwy electronic deal... i hate screwy electronic deals...

    Good Luck

(hope you get that 2009 baby :)Lincoln Continental 2000?check your cooling fanLincoln Continental 2000?ok well it should be an electric fan so see if when your temp gets bout half way see if it is on.if not then you have a fuse out for your fan or a relay. check engine light might be on for that one.. next your coolant.. then last but not least on top of thermostat housing or on the line somewhere ther is a release valve to let air bubbles out of the lines.. i bet that is the prob if everything else is fixed

How to change a 2002 chrysler sebring thermostat ?

Take the cap off the coolant reservoir. Locate the thermostat housing. Take the 2 bolts out that holds the housing in place. Be prepared to loose alot of coolant. Take the old thermostat out and put the new one in. Replace the housing and the bolts. Fill you coolant reservoir up to the limit line and replace the cap. Start the car and let it idle. After it warms up check and make sure the heat gauge go's/or stays at normal. Just off the car and check your fluid level in your coolant reservoir. If you need to add more and repeat the process until the collant reservior stables.

    97 Civic lx, overheating.?

My car is overheating, I was goint to try changing the thermostat, and I have some questions.

1 how hard is it to do?

    2. is that a good possibility, of causing the overheating?

    3. if not thermostat, then what else, and is it hard to do as well?

Any info is appreciated, thank you97 Civic lx, overheating.?The thermostat is a easy and cheap place to start. Other things could be:

    restricted flow of the coolant

    water pump turbine erroding

    cooling fans not coming on

    low coolant

    2002 ford taurus...heat problems..please help thank you!?

2002 ford taurus... heat will work on lowest setting, and when im going over 70 mph it blows out more heat, my boyfriend changed the thermostat and fuse none helped i was told it might be a switch or a blend door?? How much would it cost with labor to fix this? Thanks alot!2002 ford taurus...heat problems..please help thank you!?It sounds like a resistor problem. For each speed selection on the fan the power goes through the resistor and lowers it to say 3 volts for low speed and 6 volts for medium. After time the resistor breaks down from the heat it generates. It is most likely located in the air duct right after the blower. And will probably have about six wires going to it.

  • Car Heating Up?

    I have a 2002 Mazda millenia 2.5

I'm having problems with it overheating in certain circumstances, not all the time but it happens once in a while when is very hot ouside in stop and go traffic. I changed the thermostat, put plenty of 50-50 anti-freeze but that didn't fix the problem. Yesterday when the temperature needle was almost at the top I popped the hood while the engine still running with the AC turned off, and noticed the the AC fan was on and the other fan wasn't spinnig eventhough the engine was overheating. Are they suppose to kick in at the same time? Also are they both suppose to kick in when i turn the AC or just one fan.

If I have a fan problem how do i find out exactly what it is. I heard it could be something called a relay (where do I find that), I heard that it could be cooling sensor, or the fan. HOW DO I RULE EACH ONE OF THEM OUT? I don't want to spend a fortune taking it to the dealer or buying unnesary replacements.Car Heating Up?Nnormally your fans turn on in 2 steps without a/c on. The sensor reads the temp and sends it to the comp roughly primary fan 200* secondary 220* . to rule out fan, run wires straight to the fan from the battery . To rule out relay ,swap relays. To rule out sensor .Take resistance reading as it get`s hotter and see if it changes and in specsCar Heating Up?Yes it is either the fan relay or temperature sensor. It is hard to rule one of either out, just change both, they shouldn't be too expensive, like $100 for both or less.Car Heating Up?I had the exact same problem just last week. I have a 99 Corolla. Last week I noticed that my engine was overheating, so I took my car to a shop and had them take a look. They told me my radiator and antifreeze was OK, but one of my fans wasn't working, that's why my engine was overheating.

So, go get the fan fix before your engine blow up!! It might cost you one or two hundred dollars.

Good luckCar Heating Up?I'd check out the fan and the temperature sensor.Car Heating Up?okay start your car with the hood open.

watch the guage until it gets hot then the cooling fan on the rad should turn on.

if it dosn't theres a problem with the sencer, the wire going to the fan or the fan itself.

    hope that helps

and good luckCar Heating Up?check the fins of the radiator make sure they are free of debris and bugs and such, clean if neccesary. all that garbage in the fins can cause overheating, actually I think one fan running would be sufficient to cool the water.

Another tipoff is if you have to add coolant regularly (is expansion tank often dry?) Worst case is if the exhaust shows 'white', that's steam from water in combustion chamber. First, pull all the spark plugs, keep them in order, and check for one or two very clean plugs (again steam) to localize damage. Also, does engine run rough after cold start, then smooth out? That's also sign of one or two 'wet' cylinders. Gasket, again.

A cracked head is less likely, but produces same symptoms. Water loss is true for both cases; check for drips and rusty-looking stains on or around engine- I would guess you have already checked for loose hose clamps or soft-feeling upper coolant hose to radiator.

If the engine oil is frothy or other than black/clear, (does oil level tend to rise?) then there is leakage in heads or block. Total worst-case.My car Is Running Hot?Faulty electric cooling fan.My car Is Running Hot?its prolly your fan not kickin in

How do I change the batteries in a Honeywell wall mounted thermostat?

What kind of battery does this unit take? I can't figure out how to get the cover off.

Thanks! How do I change the batteries in a Honeywell wall mounted thermostat? You didn't say what model of thermostat. I assume that you mean an electronic programmable model.

Check around the edges along the top, sides, %26amp; bottom for a slot that you can insert a small flathead screwdriver.

Without applying too much force you should be able to pry it open.

Some models allow you to pinch the front cover inwards with the fingers of both hands so you can gently release the cover from the back plate %26amp; pull it away.

Your best bet is to try to find the original installation manual for your product. It should explain how to open the unit up.

When I need a product manual I usually try to locate a downloadable one from the manufacturers website. Search by using your make, %26amp; model number.

I hope this helps. Good luck! How do I change the batteries in a Honeywell wall mounted thermostat? This is for the CT3200... not sure what model you have but I imagine they can't be too different !

    Air in coolant system?

i have a 98 civic dx and it overheats. i changed the thermostat, lower and upper radiator hoses. well once u put coolant 1 day next week or so u have to add again because the temp. gage starts to go above average. i was wonderin if its a leak in the radiator or is there maybe air in the system?? how do u get the air out?? much appreciated thanksAir in coolant system?it got hot and cracked the head..Air in coolant system?pressure check the system to find the leak, if your adding coolant then there IS a leak, replace part that is leaking.check thermostat housing, hoses, heater core, and radiator for leaks. after the leak is fixed make sure to (burp) the cooling system.Air in coolant system?Any air will take care of it self when you run the car to operating temp. The air will be forced from the block in to the radiator. Sounds like you have a leak or a cracked block. Park the car and let it run for several minutes and watch for any leaks dripping to the ground. If not It's possible you have cracked the block and water is leaking internally. Check for water in the oil. Is the engine running any different due to water leaking into the cylinder and being burnt off with the gas. If so would will need to see auto shop. It can also leak from the heater core-- Check the passenger side front floor to see if it is wet-- if so you have a leaking heater core.Air in coolant system? There may be a bleeder screw close to the thermostat housing. I like to warm the engine up with the radiator cap removed and parked facing up a hill. That way any trapped air bubbles will tend to rise to the top of the radiator. Keep the radiator topped off as the engine warms up. You can actually measure the temperature of the coolant by pointing a non-contact Infrared temperature meter at the thermostat bell housing. That way you can calibrate your dash temperature gauge and make sure it's reading right. If the car overheats while traveling at highway speeds, it would seen you either have a plugged radiator, or maybe a head gasket that lets hot exhaust gases into the coolant. A simple gas tester held near the mouth of the radiator (cap off) will register the presence of exhaust gases in the coolant. If you didn't change your coolant every 2 years, even your water pump impeller blades may be eaten up partially by corrosion. The water pump will leak from the weep hole under the pulley shaft and leave tell-tale white residue stains typically and eventually start leaking coolant under the engine. If you haven't changed your timing belt, change the water pump at the same time with a new tensioner pulley.
