I think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?

So my central air wasn't working at all . I just moved in. So i am clueless on how to fix anything. My friend recommended one of her husbands friends to come take a look at it. So when he removed the little thermostat or whatever that box is called that controls the temp. 3 duracell batteries came out. The box wasnt' turning on, so i figured it just needed batteries. And i told him that but he insisted some wire in my attic was burnt and didnt program with the thermostat. But how could he have known this if the thermostat didnt even have batteries and wasn't even on from the beginning? So he ended up removing my awesome little digital box that had the dates program on there Monday-Friday for this crappy little digital one. Then he charged me $260.00 and kept my box in his tools and said that if it still didnt work too good to just put freeon on it that he could do it for an extra $50.00. He said he fixed some wires that burnt off and changed the thermostat. Is this even a good price for this? i really feel ripped off and very disappointed for him taking my other box with himI think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?i hope he bought u dinner cause u been had,,,a new thermostat is approx$30-$50,,1/2 hr labor to inst is approx $90,fix a burnt wire $20 labor, and to not ck Freon is just being a lazy a##,,,,i would call him bk and tell him u want your old tt bk,,,it is wise to to get a prof. to wk on your equipI think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?sounds like he's gonna sell your old thermostat. however, i like the old kind better. and they last longer. call a real repairman. since you're not at all technically inclined, it'll be hard to get an accurate diagnoses here.

260 dollars is a good price for fixing something. but only if the problem goes away. the old style thermostat runs in my area between 25 and 45 dollars. plus labor, which is always expensive.I think i got ripped off from a central air unit man fixer, or a/c man. Help!?Sounds reasonable to me if i do side work i charge $50 an hour. A digital t stat from a supply house runs $60 to $100 plus i mark that up i little. I do this for taking up my time and to make it worth my while and its still cheaper than having a company come out. The batteries in the tstat are just a back up in case you lose power the batteries keep all the programing you have set. Added freon for $50 is high but that depends on how much you needed
